Emollient
Emollients are moisturising treatments that when applied directly to skin, work to reduce water loss and cover it with a protective film.
What is it used for?
Primarily, emollients are used to help lock in moisture into skin either by forming a protective barrier on the surface of the skin to prevent water evaporation or by attracting and holding moisture in the upper layers of the skin. Though they are used medically for sufferers of eczema and psoriasis, in skincare they are widely used to increase hydration – particularly for drier skin types and products designed for use in cold weather.
What are the advantages of using it?
Successful in the prevention of environmental aggressors and natural elements, emollients work to create a barrier over the epidermis ensuring the retention of moisture in skin. Those with dry complexions will find them useful in protecting their skin, keeping it soft and smooth and reducing redness (particularly during winter).
